These comments in a Medlib search prompted the message I composed and sent in response to this statement:

“Until about a year ago one could search PubMed by full author name and get reasonably useful results (e.g. Meshobob, Kukalaka [au]), but the search algorithm was changed so that instead of searching “Meshobob, Kukalaka” it searches “Meshobob” OR “Kukalaka”, making known author searches much more problematic. ”

Subject: Searching for Joint Authors

Indeed a search for authors that winds up with OR combined results for more than one author names in the search is very likely to be useless. But instead of fighting changes in PUBMED, one can join them, so to speak by text searching the two names combined with AND instead of OR.  It also helps if one knows the core concept or concepts that they are writing about.  Consider two author names in combination, Khalili and Masson. Searching these names combined with OR will produce over 8,800 results. Searching the two names with AND will produce three results in which both are listed authors. This is not THE answer, but it is a method one can try from that famous department, if you cannot beat them, join them.

So while the search in PUBMED works by finding three publications, a guided search of Google finds more works jointly authored by Khalili and Masson, although in one case Google corrected my spelling to Mason and found a University by that more correct name and I only looked at the first twenty returned results.  This kind of searching will probably be a huge disaster if the authors are Smith and Jones, but it will work more often on less common names in combination.

A search of Khalili AND Masson in Google Scholar leads to chaos as again sources by Mason are found.  Putting quotation marks around Masson cuts the results down from over 3,000 to over 1,000 and I looked at three links and found both authors are listed in three of the four sources I checked.

One can therefore track author combinations in PUBMED using boolean searching, but one may find more results using domain limited searches in Google and also by searching Google Scholar. With Google searches, however, substantial care must be taken to look at sources to see that the results really are by the authors searched and quotation marks around names can help to eliminate nearby name and word spellings that Google likes to interject into search results.

The article I first noticed by these two authors was about mental health.
Searching with that knowledge leads to this result in Google Scholar:

Khalili AND “Masson” and MENTAL

Abstract

Although HCV is more prevalent among people with severe mental illness (SMI; e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder) than in the general population (17% vs 1%), no large previous studies have examined HCV screening in this population. In this cross-sectional study, we examined administrative data for 57?170 California Medicaid enrollees with SMI to identify prevalence and predictors of HCV screening from October 2010 through September 2011. Only 4.7% (2674 of 57?170) received HCV screening, with strongest predictors being nonpsychiatric health care utilization and comorbid substance abuse. (Am J Public Health.
