Trump’s Travel Ban Could Hamper US Tourism, Business

President Trump’s ban on travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries could have a chilling effect on U.S. tourism, global business and enrollment in American universities, say a cross-section of legal experts and travel advocates.

.

While the orders are temporary, these voices say the policy could have a long-term impact.

.

Theres a real potential negative impact, even after the 90- or 120-period is over, from a travel point of view, said Thomas M. McDonnell, a professor at Pace Universitys law school, who is an expert in international law.  If you were a Muslim from Saudi Arabia, which is not included in the list, you might say, Gee, should I really go to the U.S. with Trump as president? Who knows what might happen.

.

Trump’s sweeping executive order suspends U.S. refugee resettlement for 120 days and halts anyone traveling from Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya and Yemen from entering the United States for the next 90 days.

.

The administration says the move will allow them to review and establish stronger vetting standards in an effort to beef up travel security and prevent terrorists from infiltrating the U.S. Officials also argue that those directly affected by the ban reflect a small minority.

.

The seven countries outlined in the executive order dont crack the top 20 travel markets to the United States, according to the U.S. Travel Association.

.

But the ban sparked confusion, chaos and protests at airports over the weekend, creating uncertainty throughout the travel industry.

.

Tourism and travel advocacy groups say its too early to quantify the actual impact of the executive order, but acknowledge its important to strike a balance between security and free travel.

.

In this case, its a limited universe of people directly affected, but carries with it not inconsequential fall-out potential when it comes to reputational risk and sending an unintended message, said Jonathan Grella, executive vice president of public affairs for the U.S. Travel Association.

“CDAC is a cross-cluster service working to enable humanitarian
operations to get information to those populations affected by the
January 12 2010 earthquake and its aftermath (including issues
such as cholera) and to channel their voices back to the providers
of assistance working with local media and non-mass-media
communications.

Communication Strategies:

CDAC uses various information and communication methods in an
effort to act as a source of expertise and advice, a community of
practice, and an advocacy platform that aims at ensuring that the
humanitarian sector mainstreams CDAC, and that local media play
a role in maximising aid effectiveness, accountability, and transparency
to affected communities. The CDAC network in Haiti includes experts
in radio, mass media, SMS (text messaging), web based and
non-mass-media communications, public information officers, and
journalists, both local and international.”

II. How To Begin: You are provided a list of possible topics to choose from

III. How To Begin: Your professor leaves it up to you to choose a topic

“Step 1: Under this scenario, the key process is turning an idea or general thought into a topic that can be recast as a research problem. When given an assignment where you choose the research topic, don’t begin by thinking about what to write about, but rather, ask yourself the question, “What do I want to know?” Treat an open-ended assignment as an opportunity to learn about something that’s new or exciting to you.”

National Archives and Records Administration
NARA Style Guide

Preface

Clear writing conveys clear thought. NARA writers in all offices must strive for clear communication to explain their increasingly complex work. They write letters, memorandums, finding aids, web pages, blogs, leaflets, reports, articles, exhibit scripts, brochures, budget requests, speeches, forms, and email messages. This style guide establishes agency standards of punctuation, word usage, and grammar that will answer writers‘ most common questions and will, we hope, promote clear and effective writing
throughout NARA.

Style changes over time and even from place to place, depending on the intended audience. These differences do not necessarily make one choice
―wrong.‖ What is ―right‖ is consistency within your own work and using the appropriate language and usage for your audience.

The NARA Style Guide fills two needs. First, the section ―Writing for Plain Language ‖ will help us comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010. Second, it addresses many of the questions and issues unanswered by the Government Printing Office Style Manual (GPO manual). This guide is based on the GPO manual but includes modifications that reflect current usage.

The most notable difference from the GPO manual concerns the treatment of numbers. This style guide simplifies the rules. In most cases, writers will spell out numbers under 10 and use numerals for numbers 10 and over.
(See section 4.10.)

The GPO manual is still NARA‘s primary reference for style. For issues not covered in the NARA guide, continue to consult the GPO manual.

The appendix, ―Quick Reference,‖ may be particularly helpful to NARA writers. This list of words and phrases provides quick answers to common questions about capitalization, spelling, compound words, and plurals.

The NARA Style Guide took shape from the agency‘s specific language needs and will continue to change to reflect the needs and concerns of NARA writers. Use the NARA Style Guide for all NARA communications.

If you have questions about spelling, grammar, or usage that are not addressed by this guide, contact the Strategy and Communications staff

1. Writing in Plain Language

Writing in plain language means writing clearly. It means writing so that readers can
find what they need, understand what they find, and use what they find to meet their needs. The more clearly you communicate, the more likely your readers will grasp what you want them to grasp and do what you want them to do, from filling out a form correctly to complying with a regulation.
And the less likely it is that your readers will
call or write you to ask questions or express
frustration.

Ultimately, your job will be easier and more pleasant if you take the time to communicate clearly.

PREDATORY JOURNALS :

Beall’s List No Longer Online Except…..

Retraction Watch
Tracking retractions as a window into the scientific process
Why did Bealls List of potential predatory publishers go dark?

http://retractionwatch.com/2017/01/17/ bealls-list-potential-predatory-publishers-go-dark/

OR

http://tinyurl.com/h3695kr

Jeffrey Beall, the University of Colorado Denver librarian who has since 2008 chronicled potential, possible, or probable predatory publishers, has at least for now  pulled the plug on his influential, and at times controversial, site.

.

The decision to take down the site  and Bealls faculty page at the Auraria Library, where he remains a tenured associate professor  was his own, the University of Colorado Denver tells Retraction Watch.

.

The site, scholarlyoa.com, which just earlier this month included a list of more than 1,000 such publishers, now contains no information. The sudden change was noted Sunday on Twitter, where questions about the move catalogued, along with some answers, by Emil Karlsson  swirled for two days. Bealls faculty page was also taken down.

.

Some of the speculation surrounded Cabells, a publishing services company that had earlier announced it would house a publisher blacklist beginning sometime this year. Cabells, however, said it was not involved in the closure, and that it supported Beall. Cabells tweets also hinted at legal threats, which Beall has faced in the past.

Controversial website that lists predatory publishers shuts down
Librarian Jeffrey Beall wont say why he has unpublished his widely read blog.

My blog is now unpublished, said Beall, an academic librarian at the University of Colorado, Denver (UCD). He added that he couldnt give reasons and declined to comment further.

.

Investigating journals: The dark side of publishing
A spokeswoman for UCD said that Beall made a personal decision to close down his blog, and that Beall is still employed on the universitys faculty. In a statement, the university added that Beall would no longer maintain or publish his research on open-access journals and predatory publishers.

.

Bealls profile page on his employers website has also been emptied, as has a Facebook page that he used to publicise his list.

.

Since 2010, Beall has single-handedly listed thousands of open-access journals that he says exploit or deceive authors by charging fees to publish papers without providing expected publishing services such as peer review, archiving and editing.

.

The lists importance is tremendous, says Rick Anderson, an associate dean in the library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. There really are predators out there running scholarly-communication scams, and Beall has been the only person willing to call them out. Anderson says he fears the list was taken down because of legal threats.

LIST OF PUBLISHERS
Bealls List:
Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers

.

This is a list of questionable, scholarly open-access publishers. We recommend that scholars read the available reviews, assessments and descriptions provided here, and then decide for themselves whether they want to submit articles, serve as editors or on editorial boards.  In a few cases, non-open access publishers whose practices match those of predatory publishers have been added to the list as well. The criteria for determining predatory publishers are here.

.

We hope that tenure and promotion committees can also decide for themselves how importantly or not to rate articles published in these journals in the context of their own institutional standards and/or geocultural locus.  We emphasize that journal publishers and journals change in their business and editorial practices over time. This list is kept up-to-date to the best extent possible but may not reflect sudden, unreported, or unknown enhancements.

Database Search Results for Food Stamps and Nuttrition

This post requires some explanation.  On an internet discussion group, the topic of food stamps impacts on nutrition was discussed and a link to an article in the Washington Post on this topic was shared.  The topic was framed under the concepts of healthy meals and food stamps.  I came up with four phrases for healthy meals including healthy foods, nutritious foods and nutritious meals in addition to the original phrase. I shared links to several database search results for this topic. I had a brain storm and realized that I could have used the word nutrition as well.
Adding this word hugely increased the number of sources found. This post contains both sets of searches so that any interested in who search terminology can change search results will have a number of examples to explore and the second search lists over twenty examples of sources found with two of these searches.  The links provided with each found and shared
source lead to a Google Scholar or Google Books search of that sources title.
