Fort McMurray Area Update May 17, 2016 9 pm Update on the Horse River Wildfire.
Posted on Tue, May 17, 2016 : Alberta Agriculture and Forestry

Update on the Horse River Wildfire (MWF-009) as of 8:00 pm

The wildfire hazard continues to be EXTREME in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Winds today were mainly out of the west, pushing the fire to the southwest edge
of Suncor on the west side of highway 63 and 26 Kilometres south of Fort MacKay.
Smoky conditions have made it challenging to view the southeast portion.
It has made its way to the west side of Gordon Lake and to the southwest corner
of Birch Lake.

Wednesday’s forecast indicates another active day of burning with milder winds
and reduced spread. Some precipitation is expected for Thursday and Friday.

2016 Fort McMurray Wildfire FROM Wikipedia

On May 1, 2016, a wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.
On May 3, it swept through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes
and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history.
As of May 17, it continues to spread across northern Alberta, consuming forested
areas and impacting Athabasca oil sands operations. It may become the costliest
disaster in Canadian history.

Fort McMurray Public School District family is in mourning. We lost Emily Ryan,
our Fort McMurray Composite High School grade nine student who passed away
in the Hwy 881 crash yesterday.

“Emily Ryan, one of the triplets, died at the scene. She was a vibrant, engaging
member of our student body,” said Kevin Bergen, Principal,
Fort McMurray Composite High School.

“We are shocked, and saddened. Our prayers and thoughts are with Emily’s family
as they deal with this trying situation,” said Doug Nicholls, Superintendent, FMPSD.

1. IT WAS FIRST PROPOSED IN 1872.

2. THE FIRST DESIGN WAS MUCH DIFFERENT.

3. IT HAD TO BE APPROVED BY THE WAR DEPARTMENT.

4. MANY WERE OPPOSED TO ITS CONSTRUCTION.

5. STRAUSS FIRED ONE KEY MEMBER OF THE DESIGN TEAM BEFORE CONSTRUCTION STARTED.

6. CONSTRUCTION FINALLY BEGAN IN 1933.

7. ITS CABLES WERE MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY THAT BUILT THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE.

8. SAFETY WAS PARAMOUNT

9. … BUT THERE WERE STILL ACCIDENTS.

10. THERE WAS AN EARTHQUAKE BEFORE THE BRIDGE WAS FINISHED.

11. THERE ARE ABOUT 600,000 RIVETS IN EACH 746-FOOT-TALL TOWER.

When the original rivets become corroded, they’re replaced with galvanized high-strength bolts.

12. IT’S PAINTED “INTERNATIONAL ORANGE.”

13. ITS OPENING WAS CELEBRATED FOR A WEEK.

14. IT WEIGHS A LOT.

When the bridge opened in 1937, the weight of the bridge
along with its anchorages and approaches was 894,500 tons.
Re-decking in 1986 reduced the total weight to 887,000 tons.

15. IT HAS BEEN CLOSED BECAUSE OF WEATHER THREE TIMES.

16. IT HELPS TO SHAPE THE FOG.

17. IT WAS THE LONGEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN THE WORLD UNTIL 1964.

That honor now belongs to Japan’s Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, which has a span of 6500 feet.
But it’s still probably the most photographed bridge on the planet.

18. THE ONE BILLIONTH DRIVER CROSSED THE BRIDGE ON FEBRUARY 22, 1985.

19. THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY WAS A DISASTER.

Officials expected a maximum of 50,000 people to attend the bridge’s 50th anniversary
celebration on May 24, 1987. Instead, 800,000 people showed up, and what happened next,
as described in a report filed the year after the incident [PDF], sounds like a nightmare:

The Golden Gate Bridge responded visibly to the large live load with a reported
deflection of its roadway of almost 10 feet at the midspan. …
The situation was compounded by the 17 mph winds blowing across San Francisco Bay.
Suspension bridges are vulnerable to wind loads and, while the bridge was swaying from
side to side because of the winds and flattening under the heavy live load, near panic
conditions resulted. People were suffering from nausea and claustrophobia in the density
of the crowd, making it increasingly difficult to alleviate the situation by directing the people
away from the bridge.

“The whole bridge flattened out—its whole arch disappeared,” Gary Giacomini, president of the
Bridge District Board, said at the time. “The bridge had the greatest load factor of its 50-year life.
The suspension cables at the center of the bridge were stretched as ‘tight as harp strings,’ while
the lower cables near the tower seemed to flap in the wind … I thought, ‘Wow, this isn’t a good idea!'”

But there was never any reason to fear. According to the report, the bridge deck was designed to move
15 feet vertically and 27 feet from side to side, and Charles Seim, a former supervising bridge engineer
with the state’s transportation department, said that “I knew we were exceeding design loads,
but I wasn’t worried in the slightest. Even at the maximum design load of 5700 pounds per foot the stress
in cables is only 40 percent of their yielding stress, that’s a large factor of safety.”

20. IT’S A STAR.

The bridge has appeared in many films, including The Maltese Falcon (1941),
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(1978), Interview with the Vampire (1994), and The Rock (1998).
Movie directors love to destroy it, too. The bridge has even been featured on the cover of the
February 26, 1976 issue of Rolling Stone.

Foamhenge (Gone)

Natural Bridge, Virginia

After this Field Review was written, Foamhenge was dismantled on August 30, 2016.
It will be moved to a new Virginia location in 2017.

– See more at: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9209#sthash.4895Q67b.dpuf

The first thing that we see when we arrive at Enchanted Castle Studios – home of Mark Cline,
fiberglass sculptor and roadside visionary – are dozens of giant blocks of white styrofoam lining
the road and littering the yard. They are the raw material for Foamhenge, awaiting the master’s chisel.

“About 15 years ago I walked into a place called Insulated Business Systems where they make
these huge 16-foot-tall blocks,” Mark tells us. “As soon as I saw them I immediately thought of the idea:
‘Foamhenge.’ It took a while for the opportunity to present itself, of course.”

– See more at: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9209#sthash.4895Q67b.dpuf

Fifteen years later, after Mark became a vortex of creative chaos in Virginia with attractions such as
House Of The Living Dead (Natural Bridge), the Scare Witch Experience (Lexington), and Professor Cline’s
Time Machine (Virginia Beach), he struck up a working partnership with the owners of Natural Bridge —
a wonder-of-nature attraction — and the last megalith fell into place. “They let me do just about anything,”
Mark tells us gleefully. “They know that I bring people in.” – See more at:

Design Before Code: Thinking About Accessibility from the Ground Up – Part 2

By Caitlin Geier.

issues of building accessibility into your design process, and I’ll

phase, including some advice on using pattern libraries to help with

accessibility…”
